bible (notes of Google translate)

The bible-(notes of google translate) is a sound installation, inspired by my experience living in Glasgow as an MA student. During the period of my studies, I realised how important Google Translate was for many of the foreigner students, who used it to communicate with others. Many times the translation by Google translate was not accurate; few times it did not make any sense, and therefore the communication was becoming harder to achieve instead of easier.

By this observation, I used the “translate by voice” function of Google translate to create a sound installation; I inserted a Greek text that I wrote and I named “Bible”, and I translated it in two languages; English and Chinese.

Based on this function of the programme and by taking advantage of the pros and cons of it, I developed the idea by inserting random letters and symbols in a row to be translated and applied the translation by voice to them. By this, I created a sound piece with no linguistic meaning, but only based in rhythms and compositions of the different sounds.

This sound installation was showed at the Glasgow School of Art's ,MLitt Fine Art Practice Exhibition in September 2017.
